What is the relevance of NIRF rankings??
The ranking framework of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
Its only been a few years since NIRF’'s establishment and there are still a lot to improve. There has been multiple accusations from around the country about their methodologies, and ranking system. However, we can also look at this as a move towards betterment of our education, and if we were to give it some time, their framework might get better, and we will have a refined ranking system.
As to speak of relevance, the shift in our educational terrain has led students and parents to be more picky while choosing an institution. This has led to a competitive race amongst institutions to appear appealing to the stakeholders. A ranking like NIRF and accreditation from organisations like the NBA and NAAC serves this purpose, and assures quality in their overall performance.
